Asphalt Calculator

Estimate asphalt volume, material weight, U.S. short tons, metric tonnes, and material-only cost from finished compacted dimensions.

For planning material quantity—not installed driveway pricing, contract quantities, truckloads, or legal-load certification.

Calculate asphalt material quantity

Use finished compacted dimensions. This estimate does not include installed-project costs, truckloads, or supplier minimums.

Paved area
Material assumption

Choose one quantity basis. The default is a planning rule of thumb and can be changed.

Default planning spread rate for a typical dense-graded asphalt mixture: 110 lb/yd² per inch of compacted thickness. Local specifications and mixture properties may use a different rate.

Planning allowance and material price

Method

How asphalt quantity is calculated

1

Find compacted geometry

Enter one rectangular area or an already measured paved area, then enter the planned finished compacted thickness.

2

Apply one material basis

Use either pounds per square yard per inch or compacted density. The calculator keeps one basis active at a time.

3

Review a transparent estimate

See material mass in clear U.S. and metric units, then optionally apply your own planning allowance and material price.

Core formula

mass (lb) = area (ft²) ÷ 9 × thickness (in) × spread rate (lb/yd²/in)

With the default planning spread rate, 1,000 yd² at 2 in equals 220,000 lb, or 110 U.S. short tons before any additional planning allowance.

Use it responsibly

Assumptions and limits

  • Finished compacted thickness: The calculator uses compacted geometry. It does not apply a generic loose-lift or compaction-loss factor.
  • Editable planning assumption: 110 lb/yd²/in is a typical dense-graded planning rule of thumb, not a universal specification or contractual rate.
  • Clear ton units: A U.S. short ton is 2,000 lb; a metric tonne is 1,000 kg. They are not the same unit.
  • Planning only: Confirm local mix properties, supplier minimums, dispatch requirements, project specifications, and final quantities with qualified local sources before ordering.

FAQ

Asphalt calculator questions

How does this asphalt calculator estimate tons?

It converts your finished compacted area and thickness into material mass using either a spread rate or compacted density. The result is then shown in pounds, U.S. short tons, kilograms, and metric tonnes.

What thickness should I enter?

Enter the planned finished compacted thickness. Loose lift thickness and compacted thickness are not interchangeable without a project-specific compaction relationship.

Why does the calculator use 110 lb per square yard per inch?

110 lb/yd²/in is a planning rule of thumb for a typical dense-graded asphalt mixture. It is editable because local specifications and mixture properties may use a different rate.

Is a U.S. short ton the same as a metric tonne?

No. A U.S. short ton is 2,000 lb (907.18474 kg). A metric tonne is 1,000 kg. This calculator displays both explicitly.
